The following players were popular pickups this week in Fantasy Baseball.

Each week, Matthew Modica looks through the FAAB results to share with you some interesting tidbits on the players picked up.

As the fourth week of the baseball season came to a conclusion owners open their wallets for a chance to purchase a ticket to paradise.

Last week was the Jimmy Paredes show in Major League Baseball as he regularly fill the stat sheet and evoked memories of last season waiver wire superstar JD Martinez of the Detroit Tigers. Let’s examine the similarities of the their one week sample size.

NFBC FAAB Pickups for April 26

Jimmy Paredes, 3B, Baltimore Orioles

April 20th – April 27th 2015

  • 26 PA  10 H  (7 XBH)  1 BB  5 K
  • .400 AVG  5 R  3 HR  9 RBI  1 SB
  • .560 ISO  .960 SLG  .412 BABIP

Jimmy Paredes picked up in 26 of 30 NFBC Main Event leagues yesterday in wide range: $41 to $412. Most bids in $50-$140 range.

JD Martinez, OF, Detroit Tigers

June 16th – June 22nd  2014

  • 28 PA  12 H (7 XBH)  1 BB  4 K
  • .444 AVG  6 R  4 HR  11 RBI  0 SB
  • .556 ISO  1.000 SLG  .421 BABIP

In my NFBC Super league the winning bid for Paredes was a whopping $302 with the runner-up coming in well below at $121.

Is Jimmy Paredes this years version of JD Martinez? Simply stated, no but he was definitely worth a speculative bid. His inflated cost priced me out of the market. My evaluation of this player resembles that of purchasing a lottery versus constructing a solid investment.

Addison Russell, SS, Chicago Cubs

Last week’s buzz player and the latest baby Cub to join the fold,  Addison Russell was still available in leagues where he was not drafted. Russell also proved to be a costly option with his optimum price of $507.

Addison Russell was available in 21 NFBC Main Event leagues and he went for a low of $125 and a high of $507. Most bids were $200-$240.

I do not have great expectations for Addison, but do believe he will settle in nicely. Also appealing to me is the dual eligibility he will soon possess in the wasteland that is the middle infield market.

Yimi Garcia , RP, Los Angeles dodgers

Yimi Garcia, the Dodgers closer du jour was widely available and garnered much attention but his price remained suppressed because of Kenley Jansen’s expected return in the near future.

I lost out in the Yimi sweepstakes, falling just short in both my New York and Las Vegas Main Event leagues.

Saves can still be found in FAAB, but they don’t come cheap. Yimi Garcia was picked up in 18 of 30 NFBC Main Event Leagues for $79-$231.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly did not disappoint as he found a new way to frustrate fantasy owners when he used Yimi in the 8th inning of 5-3 game versus the hatred rival Giants instead of saving him for the ninth.

Regardless of how many saves Yimi Garcia totals, this kid is worth owning. A promising skill set highlighted by 18 K vs 3 BB over 10.2 IP.

Who will be the next high ticket item to surface in the frenzy that is Sunday Night NFBC FAAB?
